Women Making Waves: NIU BODY

This is about to be one of my favorite Women Making Waves to date. Why do you ask?

Because you know my obsession with skin care, my commitment to my youth and my desire to share products that I truly am OBSESSED with.

So when I was approached by NIU BODY to chat with the founders, Laura and Connie, I was actually quite thrilled. It’s not always the case that a product I have used religiously (hello lavender toning mist) allows me the opportunity to connect with the brand owners and this at the core of what the Women Making Waves series is all about.

I want to be able to share the stories of powerful female entrepreneurs, who have advice to share and have fun creating amazing products and brands we all need to know about.

So welcome NIU BODY and Laura & Connie – I am delighted to share more about your natural line of skin care, at affordable prices with fantastic results.

What inspired you to start your business?

When I was a student completing my final year of university, I began using coconut oil as a natural makeup remover. I loved how effective it was and that it didn’t sting my eyes but couldn’t stand how messy it was to use! Not to mention that the jar was an eye sore on my bathroom counter. I struggled to find a coconut oil based makeup remover on the market and so created my own! From this, NIU BODY’s first line of cleansing oils was born.

Tell us a bit about yourself!

I went to university for Chemical Engineering, so I’m actually a bit of a nerd. I used to play video games religiously (League of Legends!) and nothing makes me happier than an efficient and effective excel dashboard. I’m happiest when I’m outside exploring nature and being able to really appreciate every moment. I’m also fiercely competitive (watch out board game nights!) and played provincial level badminton back in the day.

What’s your zodiac sign?

Aries! And I have to say that sometimes my readings are eerily accurate…

What’s the biggest message you want to share through your platform?

Connie and I are huge advocates for women in business. As young female founders, we have experienced first-hand the up-hill battle that many women have to face when starting up companies. We hope to inspire and motivate other women to have the courage to chase their dreams, if we can do it then we truly believe that anyone can!

How would this Boss Babe describe herself?

I’m a very enthusiastic person, once I find an idea or project that really excites me it can be hard for me to stop thinking about it/working on it! I’m also highly analytical and creative, I really enjoying solving problems in unique ways. I’ve always been entrepreneurially minded (NIU BODY is my third business); so find it super thrilling to go through the processing of creating a product that brings value to customers and makes the world a better place.

Right now a huge focus for NIU BODY is on launching new products. We have 8 slotted for development and launch in the next 12 months, so 2019 is going to be a super exciting year for the company! Our next product to come out is a gel cleanser which we have been working on for a while now, it’s super hydrating and has been the number one most requested product from our customers so we are anxious to get it out into the world! We’re also going through a full re-design of our outer packaging and will be launching this new look at the end of the year.

Tell us a bit about yourself!

I’ve been interested in natural skincare for as long as I can remember. I distinctly recall coming home from school and rummaging through my parents’ kitchen cabinets looking for different ingredients I could use to create DIY face masks. When Laura approached me with the idea for NIU BODY, I was hooked!

Apart from being an entrepreneur, I would describe myself as an adventure-seeking, food-loving, health and fitness obsessed traveller.

What’s your zodiac sign?

I’m a July baby, which makes me a Cancer! Cancer is one of the most caring, sympathetic, and loyal signs (wooo!), but also one of the most sensitive and emotional (boo).

What does a day in the life of YOU look like?

Honestly, each day is completely different, which is what I love about being my own boss! It could be anything from visiting retailers, stopping by our manufacturer and testing new formulations, planning our marketing strategy for the next quarter, working on a giveaway… Laura and I always joke that even though we make 30/60/90 day plans, as well as weekly plans, it always seems like we’re a year behind schedule.

To keep up with my hectic schedule, I try to establish routine where possible. I meal prep every Sunday, start most mornings with meditation and a quick workout before heading to the office, and try to have 30 minutes of me-time before bed (if I’m being good!).

What’s the hardest part of being a Boss Babe? The best part?

The hardest part of being a Boss Babe is hearing that term and believing it! I experience a lot of imposter syndrome; when people tell me that I’m smart, or that I’m doing a great job with NIU BODY, I automatically default to thinking that they’re misinformed. I’ve been working on getting over this irrational “fear” by accepting compliments and trying to internalize them when I receive them.

The best part of being a Boss Babe is definitely inspiring other women to start their own businesses. Answering emails and DMs, and being approached with questions about starting a side hustle honestly makes my day!

Best piece of advice you can give up and coming boss babes?

Work hard and smart. No one said being a boss babe was easy! Running your own business requires a lot of sacrifice, determination, and grit, but it’s so worth it!

Do you have a daily mantra or affirmation?

It’s not really a mantra, but more of a daily reminder. I ask myself, “if today were your last day on Earth, would you be doing what you’re doing right now?”

How would this Boss Babe describe herself?

Oh man, I can feel the imposter syndrome kicking in! Alright, I would say I’m hard working, passionate, loving, kind, and positive.

As a new brand, NIU BODY’s already seen major traction. For example, we’ve been mentioned in large publications such as ELLE, POPSUGAR, HelloGiggles, CBC, and FASHION Magazine. We also have amazing things in the lineup for 2019, including a partnership with one of the world’s largest subscription boxes, 8 new products launching, and international expansion. I’m so excited for what’s to come! 🙂
